SBEC 101:    The Cost per Child is: $25.00

Program and Activities

Our Basic Safe Boating Education Program is offered year‑round for children, teens, and young adults..

The SBEC 101 Program is an 8 hour course covered in 3 sessions (6 Chapters, each with a multiple question practice test).  The first and second session is 3 hours each.  The 3rd session is 2 hours long (review).  Following the third session the students will be given a 50 Question multiple choice final examination.  To pass this examination the students must get 70% or 35 Questions correct.

In general you will learn several things that apply to all vessels (powerboats, personal watercrafts, sailboats, and canoes to name a few), and what to look for and expect while on the water.  During this phase you will become familiar with global maritime standards and guidelines. Standards formulated over several centuries and by many dedicated mariners.

The Desired Outcome of SBEC 101, and 102

The desired outcome we seek for the In‑Training Crew‑Member (Student), is for them to possess a well-rounded understanding of basic safe boating rules, regulations and safety, and a passing grade of 70% or greater.  Upon completion, each student will receive a certificate of satisfactory completion from the State of Maryland issued through Maryland Youth Maritime Academy, Inc.  (Required in the State of Maryland, for anyone born after July 1, 1972)

To achieve this outcome, the ideal number of in‑training crew members is 100 trainees in any one session, but that will depend on the number of students participating at the time the scheduled course is held.  In many settings there are a minimum number of students any instructor would wish to work with; however, MYMA has no (and will set no) lower limit, taking into consideration that some in-training crew members might need one-on-one instruction.

Year‑Round In‑Training Crew Member Program

This phase of the year‑round program offered to each sponsored In‑Training Crew‑Member begins with learning the many varied aspects on how to keep a boat healthy and happy (starting with how to properly take care of a boat).  In addition, the In‑Training Crew‑Member will have the opportunity to begin learning the many facets and aspects of boat care, from repair to electronics, on to  Naval Architectural design, leading many of them into the marine industry with the technical skills once unavailable to them because they had no formal training.
