Hands-On Training
In this part of your education, the program offers each student hands‑on in-the-water training.
It includes locating the many various Navigation Aids, from nuns and buoys to channel markers plus danger and speed markers
In addition, training will also include the physical use of signals (bells, whistles, day signals and flares) ‑ items used in an emergency
We will cover how to properly handle a boat, from leaving the dock to returning, and various maneuvers from driving a boat in slow speed areas to crossing an oncoming wave and docking (and you’ll be doing the driving - The Captain)
The Desired Outcome of SBEC 101, and 102
The desired outcome we seek for the In‑Training Crew‑Member (Student), is for them to possess a well-rounded understanding of basic safe boating rules, regulations and safety, and a passing grade of 70% or greater. Upon completion, each student will receive a certificate of satisfactory completion from the State of Maryland issued through Maryland Youth Maritime Academy, Inc. (Required in the State of Maryland, for anyone born after July 1, 1972)
To achieve this outcome, the ideal number of in‑training crew members is 100 trainees in any one session, but that will depend on the number of students participating at the time the scheduled course is held. In many settings there are a minimum number of students any instructor would wish to work with; however, MYMA has no (and will set no) lower limit, taking into consideration that some in-training crew members might need one-on-one instruction.
SEAM 101: The Cost for this phase $375.00 per Student per year
Year‑Round In‑Training Crew Member Program
This phase of the year‑round program offered to each sponsored In‑Training Crew‑Member begins with learning the many varied aspects on how to keep a boat healthy and happy (starting with how to properly take care of a boat). In addition, the In‑Training Crew‑Member will have the opportunity to begin learning the many facets and aspects of boat care, from repair to electronics, on to Naval Architectural design, leading many of them into the marine industry with the technical skills once unavailable to them because they had no formal training.
